False alarms aren't just a nuisance — they're also costly. In some areas, the first false alarm is greeted with a warning. The second through sixth instances are each met with a fine. With the seventh false alarm, local authorities stop responding to the location for 90 days unless a panic button has been pressed, signaling that there is someone in distress.

Regularly check alarm sensors to make sure they are clean of dirt, debris and bugs. This can lead to false alarm trips. Also double check that the sensors are still securely in place, as lose sensors that fall can also cause alarm trips. Make sure that they haven’t been damaged through wear and tear. (Perhaps you moved a piece of furniture and accidentally banged one of the sensors?) Finally, be aware that sensors do wear out over time.
